The Toast of The Town Since 1960
Harry’s Coffee Shop has been serving up classic diner style breakfast and lunch in La Jolla since 1960. If you’re a San Diego local and have never been here before, what are you waiting for? Whether it’s giant pancakes, a juicy burger or creamy milkshake they have something for every craving!
If you don’t know much about the history of Harry’s Coffee Shop, let me share a little bit with you. It’s a family owned business started by none other than Harry J. Rudolph, Jr.. Harry and his wife Catherine have 9 kids together and all of them have worked behind the counter at the restaurant at some point. When you walk in to Harry’s Coffee Shop you can tell that this is a place where many locals feel at home and I think the family atmosphere is what has made this such an iconic place in La Jolla.

Besides the fact that this diner hasn’t changed much over the years the food remains delicious! I opted to start my meal with a Mocha and Jarod chose a Hot Chocolate. Yes, my adult husband doesn’t drink coffee. Shocking I know! But he loves to order hot chocolate! Don’t know how he does it but he doesn’t need caffeine. Not the case for me! I feel like I’m dying without coffee. Any-who...with the word coffee in their name this is a place you can’t pass up for a cup or two of the good stuff. My mocha was absolutely delicious and perfect for a crisp La Jolla morning.

Now let’s talk food! I ordered a cinnamon roll to enjoy with my coffee to kick things off. Something I thought was unique is that they serve it with melted butter on top. Has anyone else had a cinnamon roll served to them like this before? Either way, now that I’ve had it, it’s how I expect all future cinnamon rolls to be served! It was so fluffy and I destroyed it way too fast.

For the main event I went with another iconic staple of Harry’s Coffee Shop, the B.W. Benny. What does the B.W. stand for? Why, Bacon Waffle of course! Not only is this beauty topped with slices of delicious bacon but they actually chop up bits of fresh bacon and put it into the waffle batter itself so every bite has delicious bacon flavor! I can see why this is a dish that put them on shows like the Food Network’s ‘Top 5 Restaurants’ because this was absolutely delicious. Confession: I devoured the whole thing and I have no regrets.

Lastly, Jarod and I ordered a milkshake! A favorite of ours that we don’t find too often is a ‘Root Beer Freeze’ or in this case it’s just simple called a Root Beer Milkshake. Whatever you call it, it’s delicious. Not pictured: the extra container with more milkshake!

Overall, Harry’s Coffee Shop is an enjoyable dining experience and I will be back soon to try more of the menu! Thank you for having us!
