Square Pizza Co. in Pacific Beach is the perfect place to grab a slice...or a square rather, after a day at the beach. Just a few blocks away from the coast, they serve up classic pieces of Detroit, Sicilian & Boston style pizza. The dining area might be small but it also has nice outdoor patio where you can continue to soak up the sun.

Since this was my first time trying these little squares of heaven I knew I had to get a few different ones to sample. I’ll start with the thin crust since that’s usually my go-to. I tried the Newburyport which has basil, tomatoes and truffle oil. It’s a simple list of ingredients but the fresh tomatoes are like little flavor bombs when topped with the perfect drizzle of truffle oil.

Another thin crust I had my eye on was the Andover. It’s perfectly topped with smoked pepperoni, fresh jalapeño, ricotta & bacon bits! Did I mention that everything they use to create their pizzas is prepped fresh in their kitchen? It’s a small shop but it makes sure that everything is heavily rotated so you’re not eating stale basil or tomatoes prepped 5 days ago.

Although the thin crust was delicious I will admit that their Detroit Style pizza is my new favorite. I would normally avoid pizza with this thick of a crust but I assure you this dough is different. It’s not as heavy as I thought it would be for starters. I think it’s because their doughs are made using King Arthur Sir Galahad. According to their website, “It’s a low gluten bread flour slow fermented, allowing the yeast to break down gluten and natural sugars, creating complex flavors and a highly digestible crust.” Highly digestible indeed!

I ordered a classic pepperoni square which has the miniature pepperonis that many call pepperoni cups. This is by far my favorite type of pepperoni. Perhaps it’s the way it cradles the grease preventing the pizza itself from getting too greasy but still maintaining all that juicy flavor. I would order an entire tray of this pizza in a heartbeat and probably will on my next visit.

Lastly I tried the Sicilian Pizza which is a square that looks basic but is far from it. The crust was fluffy and the toppings of organic tomato basil sauce, Wisconsin mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, parmesan cheese, and imported oregano come together to create an amazing flavor profile. Because it takes more time to craft this pizza, it’s only available at their shop by the square so plan in advance!

Pizzaiolo Fred Santos, has a passion for pizza that I truly appreciate. Yes, the pizza they craft is delicious and worthy of bragging rights, however Fred still wears t-shirts from other pizza shops. When asked why, he said it’s not about competition or whose pizza is better, it’s about a common love for good pizza. So next time you’re hungry and in the Pacific Beach area, stop by Square Pizza and give them a try. You won’t be disappointed.
