Tucked away in the heart of Kensington is an adorable place called the Haven Pizzeria. They have a unique story behind their name and of course...delicious food! If you grew up in the Kensington area you might know the story about a series of underground tunnels from the early 1900s referred to as the Haven. A father and son dug these intricate tunnels in their backyard and made it as a play area for the local children. It included fun activities like ping pong and even held a wedding reception later on. To keep the spirit of the Haven alive in Kensington they decided to name their pizzeria after it. Such a fun back story!

Now that I’ve shared a little about where the idea for the Haven came about, let’s get down to business. You came here because you want to know about the food right? Well, I’ve got you covered! Jarod and I tried several different items from their menu and I would recommend them to anyone planning a future visit. As an added bonus they also offer beer and wine to enjoy with your meal. I ordered a crisp glass of rose and it paired nicely with everything I tried.

Up first we have what the Haven calls the “Beginnings”. They have many options to pick from but our server recommended the Marinated Shrimp Skewers and Pesto Bruschetta. Neither one was too heavy which is nice when you plan on grubbin’ on some pizza or pasta too! Both dishes come with their signature walnut pesto and it was the perfect compliment to both.

Next let’s talk pizza! I did notice that they had pasta on their menu but considering the have the word Pizzeria in their name I couldn’t help but go that direction for our main event. I always like to try a classic pepperoni because I feel like it’s a good benchmark for judging a places pizza. The Haven knocked it out of the park! The crust wasn’t too thick, perfectly crisped and the sauce had a hint of sweetness.

I also like to try a restaurants signature pizza combos as well. On the Haven’s Creations menu they have lots of different combos to choose from and they all sounded amazing, but I finally settled on the Cortez. This beauty has candied bacon, mozzarella, gorgonzola, and tomatoes. Then it’s topped off with fresh arugula and avocado. It’s like a BLTA in pizza form! Would definitely order this creation again.

After all that pizza it was obviously time for dessert. So we tried two different ones! I personally had to have freshly baked chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled in chocolate sauce. Warm chocolate chip cookies are the ultimate comfort food. I don’t get them very often but I was so happy to have this for dessert.

Jarod and I also shared the Cannoli. A classic italian treat that they make fresh in house with whipped mascarpone cheese, chocolate chips and sliced almonds. Fresh, slightly crispy, and perfectly creamy. Two thumbs up for these cannoli!
